Fence Repair – Day Three

Finally the project is nearing completion, fingers crossed I can knock it all over tomorrow.

Although I was surprised that today was probably the most labour intensive day, cutting out those notches for the rails to fit into was surprisingly tedious.

It probably would have been easier if I was replacing the rails as well, I wouldn’t have to worry about making the notches match up to existing panels that way. But then I would also have to replace all the palings on the fence which isn’t something I want to do.

It was basically a painstaking approach of marking, cutting, testing, finetuning and then moving on to the next. When the fence sections weigh around 40 or 50 kilos and the wind is still blowing, that is a lot easier written than done.

But I think I got through it ok, I marked the bottom rail on all posts first with a string line, then worked my way up. Circular saw to put a stack of relief cuts in then I just knocked the rest out with the chisel.

I actually would have finished and gotten all the sections back up had I not been missing one small thing…nails! I can’t believe I’m out of suitable nails, like most DIYers I have bucketloads of them in the garage, just all too short! Bugger, oh well, a quick trip to the store tomorrow and I can tick this project off the list.
