Building a Box – Fast!

Sometimes you just can’t spend enough time out in the shop.

It’s relaxing, peaceful, and so fulfilling when things are going your way.

Other times, it’s pushing 40 degrees celsius (104 f) and the lack of a breathable atmosphere means its a horrible place to be! I built this box on one of the latter days, it was hot and uncomfortable, but the job still had to be done.

I’m not overly proud of this one, it’s one of those projects I’ve been putting off because I knew I wouldn’t put much effort into. It won’t be used or seen much so I’m not worried about it’s obvious flaws. But, if I didn’t build it on the hot day, I’d have had to have done it on a nicer day, which would have pushed back nicer projects, can’t have that.

Plus, my wife told me to hurry up and do it so that was the end of that. 😉

You can see my latest Octagonal box jointed tray in the background at the end of the video, that’ll be next weeks post given a bit of editing time. I’m proud of that one, it looks like it’s going to turn out quite nicely, much better than the first attempt at least.

Got any scrap wood projects for me? I’ve still got heaps to use up.

  1. I am so impressed! Could I use this same design on a toy box (on a larger scale of course)? I’m interested in woodworking, but have only made one thing ever (a paper towel holder in woodshop, 8th grade). Thanks!

    1. Hi Amy, Sorry for the extremely late reply. Yep you could use this design for something like a toybox but to be honest, it’s not the prettiest one out there! I would go searching on youtube for someone who has made the exact toybox you want, then you can follow their plans. This box was just a ‘gotta get it done’ project!
