My WWMM Shelves

After copping yet another veiled threat from my wife, I decided to finally get my act together and build a bookshelf for the girls room. I’ve only been promising it for the past 8 months, what’s she so upset about? 🙂

After drawing up a few different designs I realised that what I wanted to build was going to be a big job, I don’t have the time or money to spend on it right now. Then I remembered that Steve Ramsey from Woodworking for Mere Mortals designed one a few months back. It looks really nice, simple to build and wifey liked the design, so that’s what I set out to build.

Hooray! Alice likes it!

The only changes I made were in making it a little wider to fit the nook it was going in, and also increasing the height of the bottom shelf for larger books. MDF was my wood of choice, ply is just too expensive here in Australia; the whole shelf cost me about $30. And getting the whole thing built in just two days was fantastic. Wifey likes it, the girls love it, and to be honest I think it looks great in the room too!

I did make one big mistake though… Silly me built this after working night shift, I went shopping for wood having had no sleep for over 24hrs. I’d meant to buy 12mm MDF sheets, but stuffed up and managed to grab a 9mm sheet as well! Bugger! And I didn’t notice until I cut the thinner stock so I couldn’t swap it over either! Grrrrrrr! That’s why I’ve got supports on both sides of the shelves while the plan calls for only on one side of each shelf.

Fortunately I like the look of the boxes on each end and you can’t tell some panels are thinner unless you really stare at it, all’s well that ends well I guess! This will do just fine until I get the time & cash to build the one I have in mind.

Heaps of the girls stuff is off the floor and out of the cupboards now; and one less thing for wifey to yell at me about! Thanks Steve!
