Heavy Duty Light Stand

One problem with creating content for YouTube, is that if you don’t have good lighting, it makes for really flat and lacklustre videos. But then if you do the right thing and buy a few lights, you end up with tripod stands all over the place which make it quite difficult and onerous to walk around the workshop.

This is something that’s annoyed me for a long time, and so I decided to do something about it.

I bought a new light, the Godox SL60w, basically just a super dooper bright LED. Then I coupled that up with an 89cm Parabolic Softbox. The end result is a crazy beautiful soft light, however, it’s also a bit of a monster in the shop, and is very tippy when I use the little tripod stands that came with my small lights.

To improve the stands, I’ve cemented a pole into a bucket, mounted the bucket on castors, and then build a locking arm to mount the light into. Easy peasy!

Honestly, it actually was easier than I thought, this is one of those quick projects you knock out that make you instantly think, “why didn’t I do this months ago?”. Ah well, at least now, it’s done, and I can enjoy a bit more floor space.

I thought it was so useful, I’ve decided to make a better mount for my camera now as well, looking forward to designing and building that over the next few days.
